Re-design has always been at the heart of TAUKO Magazine, and we are extremely pleased to dedicate our 21st issue entirely to this theme.
In this issue, independent designers from around the world explore different ways of creating and transforming garments. The collection includes upcycling and visible mending as well as modular constructions, transformable garments, and fresh interpretations of familiar clothing items.
Using a single sweater pattern, you can discover how one basic bodice construction can be turned into several different garments, while a dress with detachable sleeves expands the possibilities of a single design. Other projects take modularity even further, creating garments from interchangeable parts that can be repaired, upgraded, and developed over time.
The sashiko technique values mending instead of hiding it, while the Button Masala technique uses buttons and elastic bands instead of conventional seams, allowing fabric to be assembled, taken apart, and endlessly re-shaped.
The selection of projects ranges from simple, playful sewing makes—such as a pin cushion and shorts—to more complex garments, like a carefully constructed, trench-coat-inspired dress. Whether you’re looking for a quick sewing project or something to dive into more deeply, there is always something new here to discover, experiment with, and learn.
Each design includes printed pattern sheets and thoroughly prepared step-by-step sewing instructions. The sizes fit a bust measurement of 78–146 cm (31–57.5 inches).
Mend. Alter. Adapt. Re-think.
Re-design invites us to notice what already exists and to discover what else it could become.
In addition to patterns, the magazine includes essays, interviews, and stories that approach re-design more broadly than at the level of a single garment. They invite us to consider how changing the ways we make clothes could also change our attitude to fashion.
Welcome to the world of re-design!
